Kids’ teeth: a parent checklist
Age-appropriate habits, fluoride toothpaste basics, and simple ways to make routines stick.
Parent checklist
- Brush twice daily, especially at bedtime.
- Use fluoride toothpaste appropriate for age and use a small amount.
- Help children brush until they have the dexterity to do a thorough job (many need help into early school years).
- Encourage water and limit frequent sugary snacks/drinks.
Spit, don’t rinse. After brushing, teach kids to spit out excess toothpaste rather than rinsing immediately.
Habit-building tips
- Use a 2‑minute timer or a song.
- Make a simple sticker chart for morning and night routines.
- Keep brushes visible and consistent (same place, same time).
Red flags
- White/brown spots on teeth, pain, swelling, or difficulty eating.
- Injuries from falls or sports—seek dental evaluation.
