Bleeding gums: what’s common and what’s urgent
How plaque-related inflammation causes bleeding, what you can try safely, and red flags.
What’s common
- Bleeding with brushing/flossing is often due to plaque-related gum inflammation.
- Improving plaque removal (gentle brushing + daily interdental cleaning) can help within 1–2 weeks.
What you can do safely
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste for ~2 minutes.
- Clean between teeth daily (start gently if gums are tender).
- Consider an interdental brush if flossing is difficult.
When it’s urgent
Seek prompt care if bleeding is heavy, you have facial swelling, fever, severe pain, loose teeth, pus, or symptoms that worsen.
